1. A rationale for teaching this sacrament in the Catholic primary school:
The Sacraments of Healing celebrate God’s love for
all who are suffering, sick or dying. Through the study of the Anointing of the
Sick students are able to understand the value of word, symbol and the ritual
of healing within the Catholic faith and link the teachings of Jesus to their
own lives.
The Sacraments support Catholics through the different stages of life and each time we receive them we are brought closer to God. All Sacraments are occasions for the whole Catholic community to celebrate together. To become active members of the Church students must understand the meaning and importance of the sacrament, so that they can participate in its celebration fully.

2. An illustration of this element in terms of its importance to the broader parish/school context:
The teaching of the sacraments, in particular the sacrament
of the Anointing of the Sick, has importance also to the boarder parish and
school community. Every single one of us will grow old and die, and we may
suffer illness both physical and mental during our life. This is part of
reality and will be witnessed within our school and parish community at some
point. Through the study of this sacrament we will prepare our children, enabling
them to understand the healing of the Christian faith. Allowing them to learn
of the healing powers of Jesus and what the sacrament means to its receivers
today, so that they can become active and aware members of the school and
parish community through the understanding of all of the elements of the
sacrament.
