The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) and the Anointing
of the Sick are known as Sacraments of Healing. They celebrate God’s love for
all who are suffering, sick or dying.
The Gospels tell of many occasions when Jesus healed the sick. The healing power of Jesus shows God’s love and care for each of us. We are called to celebrate this love. We recall how Jesus himself healed many sick people, and how he strengthened them with God’s love. As a Christian faith community, we continue this healing work of Jesus for those among us who are ill.
The Sacrament of Anointing fills us with hope.
We remember that Jesus suffered, that he died and rose to a new life. This reminds us that suffering and death are a real part of everyone’s life. But our Christian belief is that we also know that suffering and death are a part of the journey towards new life.
This understanding can help us to change the way we think about suffering and death.
